History
2022: Bacteria found in chocolate. Production stopped
At the end of June 2022, it became known that Barry Callebaut suspended production at its world largest chocolate factory in the city of Wiese, after the discovery of salmonella in one of the batches of products.
A spokesman said production had stopped at the factory, which makes liquid chocolate in bulk batches for 73 confectionery customers. The source of infection was low-quality lecithin, which is used in the production of chocolate as an emulsifier, quality experts Barry Callebaut said.
Barry Callebaut informed Belgian food authorities of the incident and took precautions to stop all chocolate lines and block all products produced since the inspection.
The panic comes weeks after a case in early June 2022 of chocolate contaminated with salmonella at Ferrero's factory in Arlon in southern Belgium, which makes Kinder chocolate. Notably, Belgian health authorities announced on 17 June 2022 that they had given the green light to restart the Italian giant's plant for a three-month test period.
