2023:18 pathologists in Bryansk received real sentences for extorting money from relatives of the deceased

Pathologists of the Bryansk Regional Hospital No. 1 received real terms for providing paid services to the relatives of the deceased. This was announced on December 4, 2023 by the joint press service of the courts of general jurisdiction of the Bryansk region.

In total, more than 200 people turned out to be victims, and the number of cases of fraud reached 91. The Sovetsky District Court of Bryansk sentenced the former head of the pathological department of the Bryansk Regional Hospital No. 1, as well as ten subordinates and seven employees of ritual agencies. They were found guilty of fraud by an organized group with significant damage. The crime was uncovered by employees of the economic security and anti-corruption unit MINISTRY OF INTERNAL AFFAIRS Russia of U in the city of Bryansk.

The defendants in the case from April 2020 to March 2021 illegally took money from the relatives of the deceased (from 1000 to 10,000 rubles) for the accelerated issuance of the bodies of the dead on weekends and holidays, renting a mourning hall, preserving the corpse in a hospital, conducting special sanitary measures to prepare bodies infected with COVID for burial, the court said.

During the court hearings, it turned out that the perpetrators knew that they were obliged to give the bodies to relatives for free, but used what the victims themselves did not know about it. In total, in this way, the criminals earned about a million rubles.

The ex-head of the pathological department received 4 years in a general evening colony and a fine of 800 thousand. The ritual agent will serve 2 years in a maximum security colony. The remaining defendants received suspended sentences ranging from 1 year 9 months to 3 and a half years. In addition, subordinates of the ex-head of the department will also pay fines from 150 to 300 thousand rubles.^[1]
