2022: Theft of 76 GB of confidential documents

It is reported that the LockBit group associated with Russia took responsibility for organizing the ransomware attack. This ransomware is able to block the victim's computer systems. Hackers are demanding a large ransom to restore access to the encoded data. LockBit is usually used to carry out cyber attacks on large companies and government organizations. It is known that earlier the victims of the malware were structures from many countries, including the United States, European states, China, [[India} India|India} India]], Indonesia, etc.
In the event of a new attack on the California Finance Department, cybercriminals stole a huge number of files, including IT and financial documents, confidential data and information about litigation. The attackers gave the injured party a deadline until December 24, 2022 to pay the ransom - otherwise the data will be in the public domain.
While we cannot comment on the specifics of the ongoing investigation, we confirm that no government funds have been compromised, and the Treasury Department continues to work to prepare the governor's budget, which will be released next month, the California cybersecurity center said in a statement. |
It is also noted that the attack was "proactively identified" thanks to coordination with cybersecurity specialists at the state and federal levels.
