2021: Creation of a genomic sequencing center with the support of Rosneft
On November 17, 2021, the president Russia Vladimir Putin announced the creation of a Genetic Information Center based on. All-Russian Institute of Plant Genetic Resources named after Vavilov
At the same time, the limits of the permissible use of genetic technologies must be clearly defined. We are talking not only about legal regulation, but also about compliance with ethical standards, "said the head of state, whose words are quoted by the Kremlin website. |
According to Putin, legislation in the field of genetics should open up space for scientific search and creation of innovations in medicine. The modalities of the future base and national bioresource centres should therefore be determined. The President of the Russian Federation also noted that unique discoveries should not remain only a scientific breakthrough, but should serve people.
On November 17, 2021, it also became known that the genomic sequencing center, which will be created with the participation of Rosneft, a technological partner of the Federal Scientific and Technical Program for the Development of Genetic Technologies, plans to create a database of 100 thousand genetic sequences of Russians. The Data Base will be stored on Russian servers, said Igor Sechin, chief executive officer of Rosneft.
He also said that another area of the center's work will be the analysis of at least 30 thousand samples of patients with specific diseases, "which will determine genetic markers that affect the health of newborns, children, adults and the elderly." Sechin noted that all these studies will be carried out on a voluntary basis. The head of Rosneft estimated the investment in the genomic sequencing center at the first stage at 22.5 billion rubles.[1]
