The main center is located in Madrid and in the hometown of the writer Miguel Cervantes Alcala de Henares. At the same time, the Cervantes Institute is represented on five continents, where 77 centers operate. Among others, such a center is available in Moscow. In its building there is an assembly hall, an exhibition hall, an audience of Spanish language courses, a library and a music library.
2021: Queen of Spain opens a division of the Cervantes Institute in Senegal
Queen Letizia of Spain arrived in Dakar in December 2021 to lead the opening ceremony of the Cervantes Institute in Senegal.
The Cervantes Institute in Dakar is the first cultural institution opened in sub-Saharan Africa, where a classroom has already existed since 2010 due to the growing interest in the Spanish language in the region.
Queen Leticia was accompanied by the Secretary of State for Latin America and the Caribbean and Spanish in the world, Juan Fernandez Trigo, and the Director of the Cervantes Institute, Louis Garcia Montero.
2013: Loss of EUR 19.1 million
In 2013, the Cervantes Institute suffered losses of 19.1 million euros, while a year earlier this figure was 4.5 million. The results were published in the Official State Gazette (BOE).
In particular, the center received transfers and subsidies totaling 51.4 million euros. The main source of funds for the Cervantes Institute in 2013 was financial support received from the General State Administration - it accounted for 58% of the total budget.
The private companies that supported the centre included:
- Telefónica (EUR 300,000),
- Fundación Iberdrola Foundation (EUR 70,000),
- Fundación Repsol Foundation (EUR 15,000),
- Grupo Mahou (12,500 euros).
In addition, commercial operations carried out in 2013 brought the Cervantes Institute about 18 million euros (approximately 21% of the total income).
Personnel costs in 2013 amounted to 55.7 million euros, which is 2 million less than a year earlier.
The average number of employees of the institute was 1,049. By the end of the year, this figure fell to 1,033 people (814 of them worked in centers and another 219 in branches).
The main activities of the institute were the creation of new centers and the organization of Spanish language courses, as well as examinations for its level of knowledge. In 2013, 130,128 training places were registered at the center (8,000 less than the projected number).
The number of courses conducted was 10,791 (900 less than anticipated). In addition, the Cervantes Institute organized 85 courses for teachers (2 less than planned). In turn, the number of people wishing to pass the DELE exam exceeded the predicted indicators - 64,163 against 62,300.
