2023: Hacking customer accounts
In early January 2023, the popular American fast food chain Chick-fil-A was hacked. Customers of the company complained about the theft of money and other fraudulent actions in their accounts. For example, a Georgia resident reported swindlers using her mobile app to buy food in Maryland, according to WSB-TV. Hackers hacked into its software and spent hundreds of dollars from a personal account, ordering half of the Chick-fil-A menu.
Information security specialist Dominic Alvieri was one of the first to spot a warning message from Chick-fil-A saying it was "not handled properly." The incident follows the latest reports that cybercriminals used one-time email addresses to hack legitimate accounts, leading to accounts being advertised for sale at different prices up to $200, depending on account balance, linked payment details and Chick-fil-A bonus points.
According to Chick-fil-A, the fraudulent activity was' not related to the compromise of the company's internal systems'. The company said it was investigating reports of hacked user accounts. As of January 10, 2023, there are no official reports of the total number of affected users.
We are investigating suspicious activity on some customer accounts. We are committed to protecting customer data and are working quickly to solve the problem! In the event the funds were credited to your account from your stored payment card, which you did not authorize, please challenge the unauthorized transaction in your financial institution, Chick-fil-A said on its website. |
Chick-fil-A warned customers to remain vigilant. If users notice any suspicious activity in their accounts, then they should immediately change their password and delete the saved payment information from their account.[1]
Founded in 1946, Chick-fil-A operates almost 3,000 restaurants in the United States by the beginning of 2023.
