2023: $10 million reward announcement for grouping data
On June 16, 2023, the US State Department announced a reward of up to $10 million for information linking attacks by hackers from the Clop group with a foreign government. According to American payments, these are "Russian hackers."
According to the department, the payment can be obtained for any information about attacks on the American critical information infrastructure (CII) in favor of any foreign governments. The attacks may be related to the Clop group, but the US Department of State added something that will be considered and information about other hacker gangs.
Thus, the US authorities responded to the incident with the MOVEit service, which affected large companies around the world. The update to Reward for Justice comes after Clop hackers who specialize in ransomware viruses carried out attacks in the spring of 2023. Hackers in their attacks exploited a zero-day vulnerability in the MOVEit Transfer secure file transfer platform.
According to the Clop group, all victims of the attack eventually had significant data stolen. The attacks began on May 27, 2023, during a long Memorial Day holiday in the United States, when hackers said they had stolen the data of hundreds of companies. In mid-June 2023, hackers began extorting money from companies, indicating their names on the data leak site and promising to start leaking data to the Internet if a ransom is not paid.
In early June 2023, hackers told BleepingComputer they immediately deleted any government-related data they had obtained from the attack. In mid-June, Clop confirmed the claims in a blog post, saying they only had financial goals and had no interest in CII or politics in general.
To provide information, the US Department of State has created a special Tor SecureDrop server that can be used to provide information about Clop hackers or other data and hackers.[1]
