2022: Attack of Russian hackers

Three German renewable energy companies were hacked due to the country's refusal of Russian oil. This became known on April 27, 2022.

Cyber attacks on three German wind power companies are allegedly related to Russia's attempts to thwart Europe's plans to reduce dependence on Russian oil and gas. According to The Wall Street Journal, energy firms do not attribute attacks to specific groups, but suspect Russian hackers. The victims of the attacks were the maintenance company Deutsche Windtechnik AG and two manufacturers - Nordex SE and Enercon GmbH.

In April, attackers hacked the Deutsche Windtechnik and turned off the remote control systems of 2000 wind turbines for a day. The manufacturer Nordex SE was forced to shut down its IT systems due to a cyber attack in March. Conti, a ransomware group supporting the Russian government, claimed responsibility for the attack on Nordex. In February, hackers disabled the remote controls of 5800 Enercon wind turbines during the start of a special operation in Ukraine.

We need high standards of information security, as the growing renewable energy sector will become an even greater target for hackers, "said WSJ Matthias Brandt, director of Deutsche Windtechnik. - The crisis in Russia and Ukraine shows us that renewable energy sources will replace oil and gas in the future.

The European Union began to reduce its dependence on Russian imports and make recommendations to citizens to work from home and use less gasoline. Europe's anti-Russian sanctions could harm the German economy, so the republic rejected the pan-European decision. The government accelerated plans to achieve 100% use of renewable energy sources by 2035 and abandon the import of Russian oil and coal by the end of 2022[1].
