2012: Reduction of staff on a third
In October, 2012 it became known that as a result of the reductions planned by the management of the largest Spanish newspaper El Pais, a third of her employees will lose work. About it as reports Agence France Presse, said in the statement of employees of the editorial office.
El Pais announced the future reductions on October 5, 2012, however details then were not reported. According to the statement of employees, the management intends to dismiss 128 people, having offered 21 more employees early retirement. Thus, after reductions edition which totals 466 people will lose 149 workers[1].
Reductions in the Spanish traditional media are carried out regularly. According to AFP, since 2008 work was lost by more than eight thousand employees of newspapers, radio and television. As the reason of dismissals call the difficulties caused by financial crisis and growth of influence of internet mass-media.
At the same time the staff of El Pais said that reductions are carried out not for the objective reasons, and because of the wrong management of the edition. Juan Luis Cebrian the president of the Prisa group who possesses the edition became the main target of criticism.
Employees noted that, according to open sources, last year Sebrian earned 13 million euros, and a part of this amount was made by a bonus for successfully carried out restructuring of El Pais. The collective of the newspaper voted for holding a strike during which intend to demand that Sebrian returned a part of the earned money.
