2022: Cyber Attack and Service Outage

On October 26, 2022, the German energy company Enercity, which is among the largest in the country, announced that it had become a victim of a hacker attack. In order to ensure the security of the IT infrastructure and minimize possible risks, some of the services had to be disabled.

In its official notice, Enercity, based in Hanover (Lower Saxony), said that thanks to the prompt response of security systems, much damage was avoided. Nevertheless, the cyber attack negatively affected the work of client services, the availability of which turned out to be limited.

Critical infrastructure is unaffected, our networks and power plants are stable, and supply security is guaranteed. But at this time, we can't make full use of all IT systems. We are working hard to fix the problems. We apologize for any inconvenience caused, "Enercity said in a statement.

Whether the attackers could gain access to the company's corporate data or personal information about its employees is not specified. The estimated amount of damage is also not reported. Enercity only emphasizes that the customer support service is still functioning with restrictions: it is available through the portal, by phone and by e-mail.

The cyber attack on Enercity comes days after German authorities announced a worsening security situation in the network space. Earlier, hacker attacks were recorded on the energy, oil and chemical sectors of the country. And on October 18, 2022, German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser fired Arne Schönbohm, head of the Federal Information Security Administration (BSI). He is suspected of having links with Russian intelligence services.[1]
