2021: Kape Technologies bought ExpressVPN for $936 million
In mid-September 2021, Kape Technologies announced the acquisition of ExpressVPN for $936 million, of which $237 million in shares will go to ExpressVPN co-founders Peter Burhard and Dan Pomerantz, which will provide them with a 14% stake in the combined company, and the rest will be paid over the next two years.
The ExpressVPN said that it will remain a separate service, and its team will continue to grow. Of the approximately 290 employees ExpressVPN 48% are engaged in research and development, OEM agreements ExpressVPN with HP, HMD Global, Acer, Dynabook and Philips were also noted.
On September 3, 2021, Roskomnadzor limited the operation of six VPN services in Russia, including ExpressVPN, Nord VPN and IPVanish VPN for violating Russian law. The regulator explained that the services create conditions for illegal activities, including those related to the distribution of drugs, child pornography, extremism.
By September 2021, the VPN service has more than 3 million customers, with more than 40% of them in North America. In fiscal 2020, ExpressVPN revenue amounted to $279 million, an increase of 37%, and adjusted EBITDA - $75 million, an increase of 35%. In total, the combined company will have about 6 million paying subscribers.

This is not the first purchase of VPN by Kape Technologies, it has already acquired such VPN companies as ZenMate and Cyberghost.[1]
