2021: Scopely bought GSN Games for $1 billion
In mid-October 2021, Sony announced the sale of the GSN Games gaming studio to Scopely, a mobile game development company, as part of a deal worth $1 billion. GSN Games CEO Mark Feldman will continue to oversee the studio under the patronage of Scopely. The deal, which is a combination of 50% on 50% of Scopely's funds and shares, will make Sony Pictures, a minority shareholder in the gaming company.
GSN Games was part of the Game Show Network, which Sony took control of in 2019. It develops mobile and online casinos based on solitaire, poker, bingo and other games. The company also released a slot game on the theme Wheel of Fortune. Sony already works in the field of video games, mainly through its division Sony Interactive, which owns a number of game studios that create content mainly for the PlayStation platform. GSN Games, which specializes in mobile games and casinos, does not quite fit into the strategy of Sony Pictures.
GSN Games has been a great business for Sony since 2007, and we are proud that the team continues to create games for players around the world. Having met the Scopely team, we realized that we had found the right organization to support and accelerate the business. We are confident that they will raise GSN Games to a new height, and Sony Pictures is pleased to become a minority shareholder in Scopely as a result of this transaction, "said Ravi Ahuja, chairman of Sony Pictures global television studios and corporate development. |
Scopely is showing rapid growth, attracting more than $500 million last year from investors such as The Chernin Group, an Advance owned by the Newhouse family. The company used these funds to finance significant acquisitions. In 2020, she acquired the studio PierPlay, which produces the popular mobile game Scrabble Go, based on the classic board game. Scopely also acquired the game studio FoxNext from The Walt Disney.[1]
