Forced rejection of Mir cards due to protests
In March 2022, Georgian airline Georgian Airways began to accept Russian Mir cards to pay for tickets, but a few days later it stopped "after public protest." Protests began at her office.
The company is declared bankrupt and put up for sale for $150 million
In January 2022, the national airline Georgia Georgian Airways, unable to pay back debts, was put up for sale for $150 million. This is stated in the message of the association Georgian Business Brokerage, which is headed by the ex-general director of the air carrier Roman Bokeria.
This became known after the Tbilisi City Court declared the carrier insolvent. The debt of Georgian Airways to 16 thousand passengers and other commercial organizations amounted to 176 million lari ($57 million).
According to the court, the financial crisis in the airline was caused by the coronavirus pandemic COVID-19 and border closures, as a result of which the company cannot cover its obligations.
The court order also says that the management of Georgian Airways has a project for the rehabilitation of the company. In particular, the company is going to continue flights in profitable areas (for which it is not specified), which will become a guarantee of its operation. Earlier, the airline had already declared bankruptcy, but was rehabilitated.
By January 2022, Georgian Airways is a fully private company. The largest share in the airline is 80%, owned by businessman David Gaiashvili, and 20% of the company belongs to Georgia Air Service LLC, owned by Eter Gaiashvili (90%) and Sofio Gventsadze (10%).
The fleet consists of 7 medium-haul aircraft: three Boeing 737-700 NG, three Embraer 190, and one CRJ 200, which fly on 13 routes to Europe, the Middle East, Transcaucasia. Georgian Airways carried out passenger flights, including to Moscow, Yerevan, Warsaw, Paris and Tel Aviv.
