2023: Closing the Spanish branch, replacing AI employees

On August 29, 2023, G/O Media, the parent structure of the popular Internet resource Gizmodo dedicated to design, technology and science, announced the reduction of all employees of the Spanish branch of the named site. Instead, artificial intelligence will be used to translate materials. In Russia, the creation of an English-language version based on machine translation was implemented by TAdviser at the beginning of 2019. Since the beginning of 2021 [1] , a neural network technology has been launched on the platform of the English-language version of the TAdviser.com, which provides a translation quality comparable to a translation made by a person.

The team of the Gizmodo en Español division included several authors who created original content specifically for readers from Spain. In addition, they performed translations of English-language Gizmodo materials. The resource Gizmodo en Español, launched in 2012, marked the beginning of the publication's work on the international market.

The new articles, published on Gizmodo en Español, since early September 2023 contain a disclaimer in Spanish, saying their "content has been translated from the original by the automatic system." It is indicated that due to the peculiarities of machine translation "there may be slight inaccuracies." In addition, a link to the English-language publication is provided.

It is noted that the transition of Gizmodo en Español to the artificial intelligence platform is accompanied by difficulties. For example, Gizmodo journalist and reader Víctor Millan says that some of the site's new articles suddenly jump from Spanish to English. This, apparently, is due to failures in the operation of AI algorithms.

In the summer of 2023, the Gizmodo resource began publishing English-language articles generated using AI. These materials contain numerous inaccuracies, which is why the workers' union Gizmodo criticized the new approach, describing it as unethical. As of the beginning of September 2023, G/O Media does not comment on the situation[1]
