Former Bank of England governor Mark Carney elected prime minister of Canada

In March 2025, the Liberal Party of Canada elected the former head of the Bank of Canada and the Bank of England, Mark Carney, as the new leader to replace Justin Trudeau as prime minister.

Carney won the contest for leader of the Liberal Party of Canada with 85.9% of the vote.

Canadian Prime Minister-elect Mark Carney:

  • My government will immediately abolish the consumer tax carbon dioxide emissions and stop raising the capital gains tax.

  • Retaliatory tariffs on U.S. imports will continue until Donald Trump removes them and we ensure that all tariff revenues go to protect our workers.

We cannot change Donald Trump, but we can take control of our economic destiny.

Canada will never be part of the United States, Trump is trying to damage our economy. In trade and ice hockey, Canada will win!

Justin Trudeau resigns after nine years as prime minister

In January 2025, it was announced that Justin Trudeau was stepping down after more than nine years as Canada's prime minister, acknowledging dire poll numbers and a "rebellion in the ruling Liberal Party."

Trudeau, 53, said he could not unite the Liberals before the next election, so he was stepping down. He will remain as prime minister until a new leader is chosen - probably sometime in March. During this process, the work of parliament has been suspended until March 24.

For almost 10 years of participation of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau in the management of Canada - one of the key indicators of GDP per capita significantly diverged from the neighbor of the United States.

US President Donald Trump, after Trudeau's statement about his impending resignation, invited Canada to join the United States as the 51st state.

He stated that many residents of Canada are in favor of their country becoming the 51st state of the United States. This would not only bring economic stability to Canada, but also protect it from external threats that come from "Russian and Chinese ships."

Inadequately high taxes (in Canada, the tax/GDP ratio ~ 35%, in the United States ~ 25%), failed immigration policies (23% of the population are immigrants, among the G-20 it is higher only in Australia - about 30%) and budget policies (budget deficits in the era of low rates hardly exceeded 2% of GDP) led to the fact that perhaps a tangible part of Canadians will now take seriously Donald Trump's calls to become the 51st State.

2024: Finance and housing ministers resign as Liberal support for Trudeau government weakens

The Liberal government of Canada in December 2024 experienced a shake-up. Two ministers left their posts at once: Chrystia Freeland - Minister of Finance, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada (and an ardent supporter of support for Ukraine), and Sean Fraser - Minister of Housing.

Chrystia Freeland - Finance Minister, Deputy Prime Minister of Canada and ardent supporter of support for Ukraine was forced to leave the government

It was the economic situation and the housing crisis that became the main subjects of criticism of Justin Trudeau's government. In recent months, Trudeau has faced calls to resign, including from members of his own liberal party. However, the Prime Minister decided instead to give the people the "heads" of ministers responsible for reducing the standard of living of ordinary Canadians.

The liberal party is more than 20% behind the opposition conservative party in the polls, with less than a year to go until the election.

The conservative opposition has already tried three times to pass a vote of no confidence in Trudeau. And the only thing keeping him and the liberal minority afloat is the fragile support of other left-leaning parties.
