The government of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania manages the work of ministries, state committees and other executive bodies of the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania and monitors their activities.
North Ossetia voluntarily became part of the Russian Empire in 1784. After the October Revolution of 1917, the republic changed its status several times. Since November 1920, North Ossetia was part of the Mountain Republic, in July 1924 it became an autonomous region, in December 1936 - the North Ossetian Autonomous Socialist Republic; in December 1990, the republic was renamed the SO ASSR, then for some time it was called the Republic of North Ossetia, and in January 1995 it became known as the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania. In accordance with the Declaration of State Sovereignty, the republic is part of the Russian Federation.
Being the smallest republic in Russia, North Ossetia-Alania became the most populous. According to the census, today more than 703 thousand people live in the republic, about 70 percent of them are residents of an urban area.
In terms of the specific weight of the number of persons with higher and secondary education, the Republic of North Ossetia-Alania exceeds the average Russian indicators. The republic has over 250 schools and gymnasiums, more than 15 colleges and schools, three universities and a medical academy, 178 libraries with a fund of more than two million books. There are eight museums, four theaters (two dramatic, musical and puppet), a philharmonic, a symphony orchestra and several dance ensembles (including folklore), a horse circus. The Republican Television Center provides retransmission of programs from Moscow and prepares programs in Ossetian and Russian.
