Queensland (engl. Queensland) is the state in the northeast of the mainland of Australia. The population — 4,513,000 people (the 3rd place among country states). The capital and the largest city — Brisbane. Motto: Audax at Fidelis ("Courageous, but correct"). Official nicknames — "State of Sunshine" and Smart State (Sunshine State, Smart State).
The Australian natives and islanders of Torres Strait who arrived, according to different methods of dating, 40,000 — 65,000 years ago were the first settlers of the region. Later, after arrival of the European colonists, in the territory of Queensland the British colony which became a separate administrative and territorial unit on June 6, 1859 was created. This date is annually celebrated as Day of Queensland now.
The territory which is nowadays occupied by Brisbane initially was colony of the Morton-Bey intended for the link there of convicts recidivists who committed a return to crime being in exile in New South Wales. Later authorities of the state began to encourage creation of free settlements that led today to development of agriculture, tourism and use of natural resources.
Most of the population of the state lives in Southeast Queensland including the capital Brisbane, Logan City, Redland-City, Ipswich, Toowoomba and also Gold Coast and Sunshine Coast. Other important regional centers: Cairns, Townsville, Makkay, Rokgempton, Bundaberg, Harvi-Bey, Inham and Mount Isa.
