Creating conditions for the development of high-tech physics

On the campus of the Baltic Federal University named after I. Kant, all conditions will be created for the development of high-tech physics. The campus will become a platform for the opening of laboratories in chemistry, instrumentation, physics and additive technologies, which will allow advanced research and training of new generation specialists. The university announced this on July 26, 2024.

The equipment of laboratories will make it possible to manufacture experimental installations right within the walls of the university, which will require students not only knowledge of physics and mechanics, but also skills in engineering, spatial thinking and design. This will strengthen the interdisciplinary connections of physics with other sciences.

Physics is the science that grows tulbuilders, those who create tools for other sciences. The tools for the fourth industrial revolution are based on new physical principles - these are, for example, microscopes for medicine with high resolution and accuracy. First, these principles are developed by physicists, then implemented by engineers, and then already applied by professionals in their fields, - said Valeria Rodionova, director of the REC "Smart Materials and Biomedical Applications," candidate of physical and mathematical sciences at BFU named after I. Kanta.

BFU named after I. Kant has accumulated scientific potential in the field of physics, IT and IT solutions. The university seeks to bridge the historically established gap between scientific research and education.

File:Aquote1.png
Our task is to establish close interaction of students with modern high-tech enterprises and industries on the basis of scientific groups, scientific and educational centers and laboratories. We are already actively involving representatives of partner companies, for example, in the work on master's theses. REC "Smart Materials and Biomedical Applications" cooperates with a number of innovative companies. With the opening of this campus within the framework of the national project "Science and Universities," we plan to significantly expand and strengthen these ties between education, science and the real sector of the economy, "said Valeria Rodionova.

Scientific equipment and laboratories of the campus are created primarily for the development of the educational program "Physics of High Technologies," the start of which is scheduled for 2024. The program involves the introduction of innovative training formats and strengthening the connection of education with the real sector of the economy.

File:Aquote1.png
The physics program involves the development of interdisciplinary connections - with chemists, biologists, doctors, engineers and, of course, IT. This program will work already in the paradigm of modern science, which provides new tools and technologies. Without artificial intelligence and IT solutions, there is nowhere, - said Valeria Rodionova.

High-tech physicists will be trained at the I. Kant BFU campus as part of the Priority 2030 project. Its goal is to form an advanced world-class scientific and educational environment for breakthrough research and ensuring technological progress in Russia. The creation of conditions on the campus for the development of high-tech physics will allow BFU named after I. Kant to become one of the leading scientific and educational centers of the country in the field of physical sciences and science-intensive technologies.

Opening of two laboratories for applied research and development in the field of biotechnology

Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University on May 27, 2024 announced the opening of two laboratories for applied research and development in the field of biotechnology. Laboratories will be located in the university campus under construction in the building of the PMC MEDBIO, where finishing work is underway in May 2024.

Laboratories will specialize in industrial, food, biomedical and agrobiotechnology. They will be equipped with modern equipment, including various types of bioreactors. This will allow research in areas such as the production of pigments and polysaccharides from algae, the study of the anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties of new plants, the development of functional feed additives, biodegradable packaging and utensils, algae-based bio-fertilizers and new carbon fiber-based materials. Laboratory developments have the potential for applications in various industries and agriculture.

Our laboratories implement a large pool of projects supported by the Russian Science Foundation, the Russian Foundation for Basic Research, the Ministry of Science and Higher Education of Russia and foreign departments. In addition, we have the opportunity to attract grants from charitable foundations. We constantly carry out contractual work for industrial partners for their tasks, - said Olga Babich, director of the Applied Biotechnology REC, Doctor of Technical Sciences, Associate Professor.

BFU named after I. Kanta plans to actively cooperate with Russian and foreign companies, scientific centers and universities to organize the practice and internships of students, as well as exchange experience for teachers and employees. Among the partners are the Federal Research Center of Biotechnology of the Russian Academy of Sciences, Sabah University (Malaysia), Durban University of Technology (South Africa ), the Chinese National Research Institute of Nutrition and Food Industry, the Vitebsk State Academy of Veterinary Medicine (Belarus) and others.

In parallel with the opening of the laboratories of BFU named after I. Kanta launches an educational program on biotechnology to train highly qualified specialists who can apply knowledge in various fields of biotechnology. Students will be involved in practical laboratory projects from the first year of study, which will allow them to gain valuable experience and skills for a successful career in the biotechnology industry.

Appointment of Maxim Demin as the new head of the Baltic Federal University

In July 2024, the new head of the Baltic Federal University (BFU) named after I. Kant appointed Vice-Rector for Scientific Work Maxim Demin. The former rector of the university, Alexander Fedorov, was arrested on suspicion of embezzlement of more than 18 million rubles. Read more here.

Inspection of neocampus under construction

Rector of BFU named after I. Kanta Alexander Fedorov examined the complex under construction and said that he would be part of an innovation cluster in which all conditions would be created for the development of advanced science, art and business ideas of young people. Eight buildings, 110 thousand square meters of vital and educational spaces - construction is in full swing. So in Kaliningrad they fulfill the task of creating at least 25 world-class campuses until 2030. The project to create campuses is part of the national project "Science and Universities," implemented by the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia.

All scientific disciplines in Kantian will receive their own "house," equipped with the most advanced equipment. So, in the cluster building of the Institute of High Technologies there will be areas of training related to robotics, material science and artificial intelligence, as well as fismat. The Technopark, a joint project with the Fakel Design Bureau, and the laboratory for chemical sources of the Renera company, an industry integrator of Rosatom, will also open here.

A landmark building for the city will be a building with a dominant tower with a 61-meter-high spire, which will house the Higher School of Philosophy, History and Social Sciences. The legacy of both the imperial Soviet style and the style that was here before can be traced here. This construction will arouse respect, - said the rector of the BFU named after I. Kanta Alexander Fedorov.

The pride of the future campus is the inter-university and public library "Thistles of the Mind," containing 550 thousand volumes. Thanks to the digital shell, up to 600 people will be able to use one book at the same time.

The Kantiana conference complex will consist of three rooms - the main one for 1000 seats and two small ones for 100. The large hall project provides impeccable acoustics and opportunities for events of various formats, from conferences to concerts and even opera performances.

Also, two dormitories for 2,500 students are being built on campus. There is an idea to open a street with cafes and shops and create a business incubator. Not to lease the premises, but to provide students to implement their initiatives related to public catering, shops, innovative proposals, which, according to the rector, will be supported by the university.

At the final stage of construction is the title zone of the university - the core of all processes related to the life support of the campus. It will house the main logistics center and exposition, as well as an admission committee and a multifunctional center. According to the head of the Directorate for the Construction of Unique Facilities of PPK "Unified Customer in the Construction Sector" Natalya Zarubina, this building will be commissioned by September 2024.
