The head of Rosatom told Putin about the creation of a gigafactory for the production of batteries in Moscow

Rosatom will build a second gigafactory for the production of batteries for electric vehicles. It will be located in Moscow. On August 14, 2023, the general director of the nuclear state corporation Alexei Likhachev spoke about this during a working meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

We are building a plant in Kaliningrad, we have agreed with Moscow - thanks to Sergei Semenovich [Sobyanin, mayor of the Russian capital] - to create a similar plant, "Likhachev said.

He added that the state corporation is "seriously entering" electric propulsion and is thinking about the targeted supply of a complete electric drive, including an electric motor, gearbox and inverter.

A Vedomosti source familiar with the details of the project claims that the new plant is planned to be located in New Moscow, it will produce batteries for electric buses and Atom cars. According to a representative of Rosatom, with whom the newspaper contacted, we are talking about the construction of an enterprise "commensurate" with what Renera is building in the Kaliningrad region.

Rosatom's plans are very ambitious, but with the current configuration, the cost of Russian batteries will be higher than, for example, Chinese imports, said independent auto expert Sergei Burgazliev. He recalls that factories in the PRC produce millions of batteries a year. According to him, in order to achieve a competitive cost of full-cycle production (including cell production), the factory in Kaliningrad should produce at least 250,000 batteries per year, that is, the volume of production should grow 5 times from the design one.

Independent industrial expert Maxim Shaposhnikov estimates the volume of production of electric vehicles in Russia in partnership with Chinese companies in 50 000-100 000 per year in the coming years. That is, the need for batteries for new machines from 2025, according to his estimates, will be from 3 to 7 GWh per year.[1]

Acquisition of a stake in the manufacturer of electric vehicles JSC "Kama" for 6.2 billion rubles

On July 24, 2023, information appeared that Ranera, a subsidiary of the Rosatom state corporation, became a co-owner of Kama JSC, which is developing the Atom electric car. This follows from the company report. Learn more here.

Rosatom owns 98.32% of South Korean lithium-ion battery manufacturer Enertech

Rosatom has almost completely consolidated the South Korean manufacturer of lithium-ion batteries Enertech International. This became known on May 15, 2023. Read more here.

2022: Start of construction of gigafactory in Kaliningrad region

Industry integrator RENERA initiated the creation of a gigafactory in Kaliningrad and launched its construction. Rostat announced this on October 14, 2022.

The plant in the Kaliningrad region will make lithium traction batteries for electric transport, as well as stationary energy storage systems for the power grid complex. Moreover, it will be the production of a full cycle - from mixing the components of cathode and anode masses to the production of finished products.

The electric transport boom is the key to RANERA's business success. Based on the concept of the development of electric transport in Russia in 2030, 220 thousand electric vehicles will be produced. In order to provide electric vehicles with domestic drives (and this is the most expensive component), RANERA began to build a plant with a capacity of 4 GVt·ch per year. This will be enough to equip 50 thousand electric vehicles annually. The project was created when demand indicators were more modest. Given the changed market conditions, such capacity is not enough, and RANERA is ready to expand production. In case of increased demand, the second and third stages will be introduced, then the production capacity will reach 14 GVt·ch.

The most important task that we solve is to ensure technological sovereignty. By 2025, we will open a gigafactory of lithium batteries in Russia. Now we are looking at the Russian market, ready to provide it. And taking into account the next technological breakthrough, we are ready to work with the international market, - assured the general director of RANERA Alexander Kamashev.

The plant will employ about 900 people. And if we count the accompanying enterprises for the production of components, then 1,500 specialists will be provided with jobs.

Investments in the project are estimated at 26 billion rubles, of which 5 billion will be allocated by the regional government.

2021: Purchase of South Korean lithium-ion battery maker Enertech International

In March 2021, Rosatom announced the purchase of Enertech International. Its participants chose not to disclose the financial terms of the transaction. Read more here.
