2021: Start using ISSE unmanned tractors in US ports
In mid-June 2021, unmanned tractors of ISSE, a subsidiary of the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), began to be used in ports to transport cargo containers.
ISEE tractors are not fully custom-made vehicles, and trucks of a familiar type, equipped with lidar, cameras and other sensors to provide a 360-degree view of vehicle systems during tasks. The main objective of ISSE tractors is to transport shipping containers.
ISEE co-founders Ibiao Zhao and Debbie Yu noted that the logistics industry especially needs more automation, in particular to facilitate the work of workers and their safety when working with heavy equipment and cargo. These are the challenges facing ISSE. The tractors presented by the company competently move in space, bypassing obstacles, slowing down if there are other vehicles and people nearby.
ISSE efficiency is enhanced not only by an intelligent approach to access loading containers, but also by saving time to find the right containers.
There are hundreds, even thousands, of containers in the warehouse. People spend a lot of time just moving around the warehouse in search of the right product, because they cannot remember what is where, "Zhao explained. - But, of course, the computer never forgets, and therefore fuel is not spent on circling the warehouse in search of a container or a place to install it. |
ISEE is already working with two large shippers, Lazer Spot and Maersk, which account for hundreds of port warehouses and about 10,000 trucks, many or most of which could potentially be automated by ISEE.[1]
