The Influenza Research Institute was created in 1967 as the head scientific institution of the Ministry of Health of the USSR on the problem of "Influenza and influenza-like diseases" for research in the field of virology, immunology, epidemiology of influenza and other acute viral infections, as well as the development of means for their prevention and treatment.
In 1992, the Institute became part of the Russian Academy of Medical Sciences.
In 2010, by order of the Government of the Russian Federation, the influenza research institute was transferred to the department of the Ministry of Health and Social Development.
