2022: Create new management to coordinate with IT service providers

On October 13, 2022, US Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks announced the formation of a new department called Information Management & Technology Directorate. It will serve as a link between the Secretary of Defense's Secretariat and IT service providers.

In recent years, the Pentagon has increased spending on information technology and cybersecurity. This is due, among other things, to the more intensive use of computer systems against the background of a pandemic and remote work. However, oversight of projects in the defense sector left much to be desired. The new management will take over these tasks, and will also deal with existing problems.

Recent efforts to consolidate information resources focused on reducing costs, combined with the increased workload due to telecommuting and the rapid development of technologies, have identified the need to strengthen control over IT infrastructure, Ms. Hicks said.

The Information Management & Technology Directorate will be headed by Danielle Metz, formerly the Pentagon's deputy chief information officer. The structure will report to Michael Donley, the US Department of Defense's director of administration and management.

It is reported that the created department will have to solve a number of urgent tasks. In addition to interacting with IT service providers, this is an upgrade of applications and systems, as well as cybersecurity issues. In addition, the structure will work out recommendations and implement policies for the director of information technology of the US Department of Defense, the director of digital technology and artificial intelligence, as well as other high-ranking IT specialists of the US military department.[1]
