Information on ₽3 billion investment in banana cultivation
Investments in the amount of ₽3 billion will be directed to the construction of Russia's first industrial complex for the cultivation of bananas, the implementation of which in the suburb of Nevinnomyssk was initiated by the PlodoWitta company. The project provides for the creation of a high-tech greenhouse farm with a year-round production cycle. The launch of the initiative on June 25, 2025 was announced by the press service and information policy department of the governor and the government of the Stavropol Territory.
According to Interfax, the company will cultivate Anamur bananas in closed ground conditions. The total area of the greenhouse complex will be 45.9 hectares. The implementation of the investment project will ensure the creation of 57 jobs in the region.
The production facilities of the enterprise will allow the production of 21.5 tons of bananas annually. The Minister of Agriculture of the Stavropol Territory Sergei Izmalkov in his telegram channel indicated that the achievement of the design capacity is scheduled for 2029. Full loading of production will occur four years after the start of construction.
Sergei Izmalkov previously explained to reporters the possibility of obtaining the first banana harvest in the Stavropol Territory in 2026. The implementation of this scenario depends on the successful solution of all organizational and technical issues on the project. Start-up dates can be adjusted depending on the progress of construction work.
The construction of the greenhouse complex will be carried out on the territory of the advanced socio-economic development of Nevinnomyssk. This status of the territory provides investors with tax benefits and administrative preferences. The TASED regime contributes to attracting private investment in the region's economy.
The investors of the project are the local company Gengroup Rus and Kazakhstan's GenGroup Qazaqstan.[1]
Construction of the first greenhouses in Russia for growing bananas
Andrei Platonov, General Director of the Association for the Development of Subtropical Agriculture, announced the construction of the first greenhouses in Russia for growing bananas. This became known in January 2025.
According to TASS, the Minister of Agriculture of the Russian Federation Oksana Lut confirmed the readiness of the ministry to support the production of tropical fruits on an industrial scale, subject to economic efficiency for all market participants. The harvest of bananas in greenhouses is scheduled for 2025.
The issue of starting growing bananas in Russia has been considered by the department since November 2024 after the successful launch of a similar project in Kazakhstan. The Turkish company built a greenhouse complex there with an area of more than 5 hectares with climate control and adaptive nutrition systems, planning to reach a production capacity of 1,000 tons of products per year.
The head of the city of Nevinnomyssk, Mikhail Minenkov, announced plans to build the first large-scale complex for growing tropical crops in Russia on the territory of the advanced socio-economic development of Nevinnomyssk. The 46-hectare plot of land is designed to produce not only bananas, but also passion fruit, mangoes, avocados, almonds and pistachios.
According to the Rosselkhoznadzor, about 1.4 million tons of bananas are imported into Russia annually, with almost the entire volume coming from Ecuador. In the first ten months of 2024, the volume of imports amounted to 1.16 million tons, which is 6% less than the same period in 2023.
Associate Professor of the Financial University Petr Shcherbachenko noted that the creation of domestic banana production can reduce dependence on foreign supplies and increase the country's food security, but economic feasibility will depend on technology and investment availability.[2]
