2023: BYD buys auto chip business from Jabil for $2.2 billion

On August 28, 2023, the Chinese company BYD, the world's largest manufacturer of electric vehicles, announced an agreement to buy an automotive chip business from American Jabil. The transaction amount is approximately $2.2 billion.

The Singapore firm Jabil Circuit, which produces printed circuit boards for the automotive industry, formed a subsidiary structure in August 2023, which included Chinese manufacturing facilities in Chengdu and Wuxi. It is this new division, under the terms of the contract, that will become the property of BYD Electronics. Nothing has been reported on how the deal is planned to be financed.

BYD announces agreement to buy car chip business from US-based Jabil

The acquisition is expected to help BYD expand its production of electronic components for cars and improve competitiveness in the Chinese market. In turn, Jabil intends to direct the funds received for the development of products for promising industries, among which electric vehicles, renewable energy sources, healthcare, cloud data centers, artificial intelligence platforms, etc. are named. In addition, Jabil will continue to work with partners to improve supply chain efficiency.

The main business of BYD Electronics is the sale of electronic components for household appliances and consumer electronics such as smartphones and laptops. The Jabil deal will expand the customer base of BYD Electronics, as well as increase the range of products supplied. Under the terms of the signed agreement, the company will continue to produce components for existing orders.[1]

1966: Founding a company in American Detroit

Jabil Circuit Inc. owes its name to two engineering friends who created it in 1966 in Detroit, Michigan, United States. Initially, it was located in their garage, and in order not to waste extra time and resources on inventing a brand, the founders simply made it up of their names - James and Bill, as a result of which the word Jabil turned out.

From a modest electrical equipment repair shop, Jabil has evolved into one of the world's largest contract electronics manufacturers.
