2023: Start of NPP construction

At the end of October 2023, the construction of the Karun nuclear power plant began in Iran. Its capacity will exceed 300 megawatts.

According to the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran (OAEI) Mohammad Eslami, it is planned to invest at least $5 billion in the extraction of radioactive materials in the province of West Azerbaijan, as well as in the construction of the Karun nuclear power plant.

Construction of the Karun nuclear power plant began

By the end of October 2023, there is no detailed information about the Karun NPP. In particular, it is not known how many reactors are planned to be placed at the power plant. According to information from the Internet encyclopedia Wikipedia"," "Karun" will be the first nuclear power plant that is completely designed and built by Iran on its own, except for the IR-40 research nuclear reactor.

According to the head of the Iranian Atomic Energy Agency Abbas Salehi, who are also quoted by Wikipedia, the Swiss corporation ABB has been a partner (external consultant) in this project for several years, but withdrew from it due to international sanctions.

By the end of October 2023, according to RIA Novosti, only one nuclear power plant is operating in Iran - in Bushehr, which is being built with the assistance of the Russian side. The first unit of the nuclear power plant, completed with the participation of Moscow, was connected to the national energy system of the republic in September 2011. The construction of the second and the contract for the construction of the third power unit is underway. The construction of block No. 2 officially began in the fall of 2019.

On July 19, 2023, PressTV, citing Eslami, informed that Iran plans to build five nuclear power plants by 2041. Then the head Mohammad Eslami said that five places have been identified for the construction of power plants and the first steps have already been taken to prepare for the project. In some cases, executive work began after the signing of contracts with enterprises.[1]
