MAE (Kunstkamera) RAS is the heir to the first state public museum of Russia, established by Peter I in 1714. The museum has a unique ethnographic foundation that reveals the history and life of the peoples of the world, an extensive archaeological collection and a collection on physical anthropology.

2025: Opening a storage facility for 5.3 billion rubles

The storage facility of the Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography named after Peter the Great (Kunstkamera) of the Russian Academy of Sciences with an area of ​ ​ 25,000 square meters. m put into operation in St. Petersburg. Permission to commission the building was obtained on July 17, 2025. This was announced in July 2025 in the press service of the "Single Customer in the Construction Sector." The initial cost of procurement for the construction of a multifunctional center for Kunstkamera in 2021 was 5.3 billion rubles.[1]

1959: Visit of Haile Selassie

On July 9, 1959, Emperor Haile Selassie of Ethiopia visited the "Ethiopian Exhibition" at the Kunstkamera Museum of Anthropology and Ethnography.

During the visit, he presented the director of the Institute of Ethnography, Professor S.P. Tolstov and the head of the Africa Sector, Professor D.A. Olderogge, with commemorative gold medals.
