2021: Criminal case against hospital workers after leg amputation to patient

In early December 2021, a criminal case was opened against employees of the Leninogorsk Central District Hospital in Tatarstan under Part 2 of Art. 118 of the Criminal Code (causing grievous bodily harm to the patient) and Part 2 of Art. 293 of the Criminal Code (negligence).

According to investigators, in January 2017, a local resident was admitted to the trauma department of the hospital with a broken leg. The anesthesiologist was drunk and did not reveal the contraindication to cerebrospinal anesthesia in the patient. In addition, he unsuccessfully injected him with a spinal needle several times until another doctor did it for him. As a result, the man developed spinal cord necrosis.

Subsequently, the head of the trauma department and the attending doctor, an orthopedic traumatologist, operated on the Tatarstan man and installed Ilizarov's apparatus for him. Soon, the man began neurological disorders, but the head consulted with a neurologist on this issue only a day later, although this needed to be done immediately.

According to the investigation, all the above actions led to the damage to the patient's spinal cord and he needed amputation of the legs. Doctors did not admit involvement in the commission of the crime. The criminal case with the approved indictment was sent to court.

The defendants in the criminal case were the 67-year-old head of the trauma department, the 37-year-old orthopedic traumatologist and the 54-year-old anesthesiologist-resuscitator. They pleaded not guilty.

As specified in the Investigation Department of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for the Republic of Tatarstan, the victim is a former paratrooper who in the 90s participated in the Chechen campaign, the owner of various awards. The head of the Tatarstan Investigation Department Valery Lipsky and the administration of the Leninogorsk district provided a man who lived in a rented apartment with his mother with financial assistance to buy housing. UK employees furnished her with furniture and bought him an electric wheelchair.[1]
