2021: Zoom bought Liminal
On December 27, 2021, Zoom announced the purchase of software developer for virtual events Liminal. This company creates special tools for the Zoom platform.
According to Zoom, the acquisition included "certain assets from Liminal," as well as two co-founders of the company, Andy Carluccio and Jonathan Cocotailo.
Liminal add-ons, known as ZoomOSC and ZoomISO, are used to create professional virtual events, and Zoom said it plans to integrate these capabilities into its own software.
The ZoomOSC add-in helps users improve professional meetings and events with Open Sound Control to integrate Zoom with third-party software, media servers, and hardware controllers. As for ZoomISO, this allows you to export each participant's video stream as a separate output to professional production equipment, while up to five channels are output in high resolution.
Zoom announced the acquisition on its blog, which talks about how the future of virtual events on its platform is developing. As the COVID-19 pandemic approaches its third calendar year, more and more events are being moved online, and organizers are demanding additional capabilities from apps like Zoom. As a result, Zoom had to expand its own offerings, as well as rely on third-party add-ins such as Liminal offers.
By acquiring these assets from Liminal, Zoom said, its platform will be able to better bridge the gap between "new" and "traditional" event management tools. In the end, the company wants to help broadcasting studios, cinemas and other organizations create better broadcasts.
Zoom said that Liminal add-ons will remain available through the Liminal website for the time being, although once it creates similar capabilities on the Zoom platform, a separate site will no longer be needed.[1]
