2021: Foxconn bought the plant from Macronix International for $90 million
In early August 2021, Foxconn, a contract manufacturing iPhone company, acquired a processor plant from another Apple supplier, Macronix International. The buyer intends to use this enterprise for the manufacture of components for electric vehicles.
According to AppleInsider, Foxconn may become a partner in the production of Apple Car machines (according to rumors, Apple is developing such cars), from here the company is actively working to expand all its capabilities in the production of electric vehicles, so Foxconn acquired a plant from Macronix for $90 million. The factory is located in the Taiwanese city of Hsinchu, where TSMC is building a new plant.
Macronix International specializes in the development and production of memory. However, Foxconn is not going to use the plant to produce RAM. On the contrary, it retains premises and equipment, but is likely to part with existing staff. SiC chips are silicon carbide semiconductors used in electric vehicles, as well as in 5G base stations.
For us, this is a great opportunity to turn a 6-inch chip factory into a research and production base for SiC chips. We will continue to work to improve our production chains, "said Young Liu, chairman of the Foxconn board of directors. |
The new plant will come as Foxconn continues its efforts to produce electric vehicles, including a partnership with Fisker to produce an electric vehicle by 2023. The company also works with the Chinese startup Byton to produce electric vehicles.
Foxconn intends to supply components for 10% of electric vehicles in the world by 2027. These all actions pose a threat to established automakers, providing technology companies with the shortest path to competition in the automotive market, the newspaper notes.[1]
