2023: Hacking and accessing SpaceX drawings
In mid-March 2023, the cybercriminal group LockBit announced IT infrastructures the hacking of Maximum Industries, which is said to be a contractor for a private aerospace corporation. SpaceX Elona Musk
LockBit attackers claim that by introducing a ransomware program, they managed to steal approximately 3,000 unique drawings and schemes created by SpaceX specialists. For these files, cybercriminals want to receive a ransom, threatening to put up documents for sale on the Internet in case of non-payment. Hackers set March 20, 2023 as the deadline for transferring money.
I would say we were lucky if SpaceX contractors were more accommodating. But I think this information will quickly find its buyer. Elon Musk, we can sell drawings to other manufacturers - rather build your ship and fly away, the attackers wrote in a post on the dark web. |
A similar message, as noted by The Register, could mean that Maximum Industries is not going to pay the ransom, despite threats to sell the schemes. Experts note that the drawings themselves may not be very useful: the fact is that the parts need to be made, which is not easy from a technical point of view, and then use them in aerospace equipment without arousing suspicion.
At the same time, as noted by the Cybernews resource, there is no publicly available information about the alleged cooperation between SpaceX and Maximum Industries. The latter specializes in tools for water blasting of parts, laser cutting and processing with numerical program control. The company offers some services for the aerospace industry. Representatives of SpaceX and Maximum Industries do not comment on the message about the theft of drawings.[1]
