2025: Sanatorium nurse sentenced to prison for contracting HIV and hepatitis more than 70 people
On December 15, 2025, the Nalchik City Court sentenced in a criminal case on the mass infection of patients with a private sanatorium with HIV infection and hepatitis. The nurse of the treatment room was sentenced to four years in prison with serving in a general regime colony.
As the prosecutor's office of the Kabardino-Balkarian Republic established, in the period from September 2022 to November 2023, sanitary and epidemiological rules were systematically violated in the private sanatorium "Medis" in Nalchik. Non-sterile medical devices were used in the medical institution, the requirements for their disinfection (disinfection and sterilization) were not met, the repeated use of tools intended for disposable use was allowed. These disorders led to severe consequences: 71 patients were infected with acute viral hepatitis C, five people were diagnosed with HIV infection.
Initially, charges under Art. 236 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Violation of sanitary and epidemiological rules, resulting in negligence, a massive illness of people") were brought against three employees: the general director, doctor and nurse of the treatment room. The nurse was also charged under Art. 122 of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation ("Infection of another person with HIV infection due to improper performance of his professional duties").
According to the joint press service of the judicial system of Kabardino-Balkaria, the conviction was passed on the nurse of the institution. The criminal prosecution of the general director of the sanatorium and the doctor was terminated on the basis of the expiration of the period established by law for criminal prosecution. The license of the Medis sanatorium for medical activities has been canceled.
As of December 15, 2025, the verdict did not enter into force.[1]
