2018: UMC buys Mie Fujitsu Semiconductor for $520.25 million

On June 29, 2018 the Japanese Fujitsu announced sale to the subsidiary semiconductor company Mie Fujitsu Semiconductor (MIFS) to the Taiwan contract producer of United Microelectronics Corporation (UMC) chips.

To this transaction of UMC owned 15.9% of the stocks MIFS. According to the reached agreement, the 84.1 percent share which on January 1, 2019 remained will take over by UMC for 57.6 billion yens (about $520.25 million). Profile bodies of the government should approve the transaction still.

Fujitsu sold semiconductor "daughter" for $520 million

Within cooperation of Fujitsu and UMC which beginning is dated 2014 based on MIFS the line of production of 40-nanometer logical chips was started and also the agreement on licensing of 40-nanometer UMC technology is signed.

In the press release MIFS is called Fujitsu Semiconductor and UMC joint venture which is engaged in production of 300-mm semiconductor plates. After several years of joint work partners agreed about integration of MIFS into UMC. They considered that such transaction thanks to a wide product portfolio, expanded production examination and advanced technologies of the buyer will bring the maximum benefit to all concerned parties, including clients.

It is supposed that having completely taken over by UMC, the MIFS company will be able to offer production services of higher quality. Whether the sold company will save the name, will is defined after closing of the transaction, are equal as well as conditions of deliveries of Fujitsu.

The MIFS enterprise will add UMC release of not less 28 thousand 300-mm plates in a month. This essential reinforcement to production capabilities of the Taiwan contract chipmaker which locates the 300-mm plants on Taiwan and in China.

Add to UMC that purchase of the debugged and checked factory will provide a fast investment payback in comparison with construction of the enterprise from scratch on which billions of dollars and several years will be required.[1]
