2021: Launch of cryptocurrency exchange with Coinbase Global
In August 2021, Coinbase Global merged with Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group to launch a cryptocurrency exchange in Japan, which allows account holders in the country's largest bank to buy and sell virtual currencies.
The company began by allowing trading in five digital tokens: Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash and Stellar.
Although Coinbase began operations in Japan with a focus on retail customers, the company is "optimistic about the prospects for institutional business."
