2022: Spanish police stop creation of Mocro Mafii in Catalonia
During a large-scale joint operation in October 2022, the Dutch and Spanish police, along with the Catalan Mossos d'Esquadra, thwarted the Wet Mafia's attempt to settle in Catalonia.
The operation against this dangerous criminal organization was carried out with simultaneous raids in the Netherlands and Catalonia. The main base of criminals was in the Netherlands and Belgium. Therefore, the Dutch police also participated in the operation.
Two high-ranking members of the mafia group were arrested in The Hague, and a third in Mataro (Barcelona). In addition, four people are still wanted.
Weapons, money and goods were seized.
Firearms and ammunition were seized in the Netherlands, as well as about 2 million euros. To this, the group bought apartments, luxury goods and expensive cars. They were then laundered in Spain through intermediary companies. The suspects are linked to money laundering, drug trafficking, illegal possession of weapons and membership in a criminal organization.
The speed and responsiveness of the cooperation of SIRENE's office in Spain, as well as the momentum and support provided by the Barcelona Provincial Prosecutor's Office's Office, were crucial in accelerating the investigation between the two countries. Thus, the operation prevented this Dutch wet mafia from settling in Catalonia. Here they planned to launder money from drug trafficking through various companies and the purchase of goods.
