Company

MyHeritage is a global online platform that allows participants to create their own family websites, share photos and videos, create ancestral trees and search for ancestors, and produce genealogical DNA tests. The company was founded in 2003 in Israel. According to the company, more than 100 million people use its platform (data for January 2022).

History

2021: A fine of 1.5 million rubles for refusing to localize the data of Russians

On January 17, 2022, the Tagansky Court of Moscow fined the online platform MyHeritage, whose servers are located in Israel, 1.5 million rubles for refusing to localize the data of Russians.

The publication recalls that according to Russian laws, companies are required to ensure the recording, systematization, storage and extraction of personal data of Russians using databases in the country. Roskomnadzor claims that this allows us to provide the necessary data protection in Russia.

2020: Verification of the Moscow prosecutor's office for the legality of DNA collection

In March 2020, it was reported that the MyHeritage would check the Moscow prosecutor's office for the legality of collecting DNA tests from Russians. The service offers users, among other things, to do a DNA test to find out from which regions the ancestors came. There is no information about the results of the data validation in the public domain.[1]
