History

2023: India's stock market overtakes Hong Kong to become seventh in the world

By the end of 2023, India overtook Hong Kong in terms of stock market capitalization, reaching seventh place in the world. This is stated in a study by the World Federation of Exchanges (WFE), the results of which were published in mid-December 2023.

According to WFE estimates, at the end of November 2023, the total market capitalization of the National Stock Exchange of India (NSE) reached approximately $3.989 trillion. At the same time, the Hong Kong Stock Exchange (HKEX) indicator amounted to about $3.984 trillion. It is noted that on December 12, 2023, the Nifty 50 index (the main NSE index, which tracks the performance of the 50 largest companies by market capitalization from various sectors of the Indian economy) reached a record value, rising 16% over the year. At the same time, the Hang Seng index (the main exchange index HKEX) collapsed by 17% during 2023. The recorded Hang Seng, as emphasized, was the worst performance among the main stock markets of the Asia-Pacific region. At the same time, the index fell for the fourth year in a row (by the end of 2023).

India overtakes Hong Kong in stock market capitalization

Several factors contribute to the growth of India's stock market, the study said. These are increased liquidity, higher investor activity at the local level and improved global macroeconomic dynamics, including a drop in US Treasury yields.

India World Bank is one of the world's fastest-growing economies as of 2023 and could reach high-middle-income status by 2047, according to data. HSBC Analysts note that industries such as, health care power, banking, automotive, retail, real estate and telecommunications have good development prospects in India.[1]
