The national technical university "Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute", till 1929 the Kharkiv Institute of Technology. Since 1930 as a result of reorganization of Kharkiv Polytechnical Institute based on separate faculties six independent institutes are created. In the territory of the high school town remained: The Kharkiv Mechanical Engineering Institute (KMEI), the Kharkiv Chemical Institute of Technology (KCIT) and the Kharkiv electrotechnical institute (HETI), and from the 1975th the Kharkiv polytechnical institute of the Order of Lenin of V.I. Lenin — is founded in 1885 in Kharkiv by the academician V.L. Kirpichyov according to the "mendeleevsky" program of the Russian Institutes of Technology.

History
2000
In 2000 the decree of the President of Ukraine to HGPU provides the status of National (NTU "HPI").
1994
In April, 1994 the Cabinet of Ukraine gave to the Kharkiv polytechnical institute the status of the State polytechnical university.
1949
Based on four universities in 1949 mechanical engineering, chemical and technology, electrotechnical and institute of the cement industry were integrated and on their basis the polytechnical institute of V.I. Lenin is recovered. Semko M. F., the Doctor of Engineering, professor, Hera of Socialist Work who worked 30 years the permanent rector of HPI was appointed the rector.
For years of the Soviet power the institute trained over 120 thousand specialists (before revolution — 2400). Many graduates of institute became Heroes of the Soviet Union and Socialist Work, prominent scientists and statesmen, winners of Lenin and State awards.
1930
In 1930 based on separate faculties of institute five independent universities were created: mechanical engineering (in 1949 it is merged into institute), electrotechnical it (is integrated), chemical and technology it (is also integrated), construction (HISI), aviation (HAI), HADI.
1921-1929
In 1921 at institute the working faculty, the first in Ukraine, and in 1923 at the request of students, teachers and the staff of institute was open, the name of V.I. Lenin was appropriated to it. In 1929 the Institute of Technology of V.I. Lenin will be transformed to polytechnical institute of Lenin.
1898
In 1898 HPTI in connection with deepening of theoretical education is renamed into Institute of Technology of the emperor Alexander III.
1885
The institute is solemnly open on September 15, 1885 as practical Institute of Technology with two departments — mechanical and chemical on which only 125 people were accepted. The famous scientist in the field of mechanics and resistance of materials, honored professor V.L. Kirpichyov was the organizer and the first director of institute (who was never an academician).
