2025: Application of robotic trainers

The National Basketball Association (NBA) in mid-February 2025 introduced an innovative series of robot coaches designed to train professional basketball players. The first test tests of the new technology are being conducted by the Golden State Warriors team, which assesses the capabilities of automated coaches to work with players on the court.

According to Footboom, the league has developed robots in close cooperation with players and coaches to meet their needs as much as possible. NBA Commissioner Adam Silver called the robots "the last stars of the NBA."

ABE robot

The new development includes three types of robots:

  • ABE (Automated Basketball Engine) - a robot for working out throws from different distances
  • MIMIC (Motion & Intercept Modular-Interface Coordination) is an attack training robot protector
  • KIT (Kinematic Interface Tool) - a robot motivator to support players off the court

The ABE robot specializes in shooting training, tracking the rebound of the ball from the basket and the position of the player. It is able to work without interruptions, which significantly increases the effectiveness of the training process.

The MIMIC defense robot is designed to practice attacking and defensive actions. Golden State Warriors head coach Steve Kerr actively uses these robots in training, giving them teams as regular players.

The third robot KIT serves as the motivator of the command. He moves around the locker room, shows films and gives motivational speeches during training.

It's pretty weird at first, but these robots don't need breaks or water. They just make you work harder, "noted Golden State Warriors player Stephen Curry.

Robots are equipped with micro-motion tracking systems and are capable of providing instant feedback that surpasses the capabilities of a human trainer. They analyze players' technique and help correct errors in real time.[1]
