2024: Establishment of the Centre

The President Russia Vladimir Putin signed a decree establishing the National Center for Genetic Resources of Farm Animals. The corresponding document was published on March 19, 2024.

The new organization will study, preserve genetic diversity and develop genetic technologies as applied to farm animals. This, as the initiators of the project expect, will ensure the long-term needs of the domestic agricultural industry. In addition, the center will deal with:

  • monitoring the state of these genetic resources;
  • replenishing collections of genetic resources for scientific purposes;
  • determination of rules and general principles for the description of their samples included in collections, and other measures aimed at a comprehensive solution to the problems of accelerated development of genetic technologies.

The preservation of agricultural biodiversity is the basis for the sustainability of production systems, that is, their ability to adapt to changing environmental conditions, including climate and market needs, - comments Dmitry Pyshny, Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education of the Russian Federation. - By keeping biodiversity in a renewable form, agricultural production systems become more protected from the effects of adverse factors. As a result, this serves to ensure food security. Such tasks are our national priorities.

The interdepartmental commission on the formation, preservation and use of collections of genetic resources of farm animals will coordinate the activities of the center. Members of the commission will be representatives of federal executive bodies, the Russian Academy of Sciences (RAS) and the National Research Center "Kurchatov Institute."
