2022: Pentagon creates new military organization to combat cyber attacks
On December 19, 2022, the US Department of Defense raised the status of one of the structures within the country's Cyber Command (CYBERCOM), the main tasks of which are centralized cyber operations and the protection of military computer networks.
We are talking about the permanent joint task force Cyber National Mission Force (CNMF). It consists of 39 combined cyber commands with more than 2,000 military personnel and civilians who perform a variety of tasks: this can be, for example, ensuring election security, combating cyber espionage or ransomware. It is noted that in four years, the CNMF group inspected more than 60 computer networks and sent its employees 38 times for missions in 21 countries.
As announced by General Paul Nakasone, head of the US Cyber US Cybercom, the CNMF group received the status of "subordinate joint command." This change effectively formalizes the CNMF as a permanent military structure, and Cyber Command acts as its parent organization. It is assumed that the new status will improve the efficiency and speed up the work of the group, as well as help in the operational adoption of strategic decisions. Major General William Hartman, commander of the CNMF, noted that his unit could be considered as an analogue of the Joint Special Operations Force, which is part of the US Special Operations Command.
It is noted that the US Cybercom regularly conducts operations in the network space. Such events are associated not only with the reflection of hacker attacks, but also with the collection of important information about the tactics, methods, capabilities and tools of opponents in cyberspace.[1]
