The national library of Uzbekistan of Alisher Navoiy (till April 12, 2002 the State library of the Republic of Uzbekistan of Alisher Navoiy) received the status of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan, "national" on the basis of the Decree, "About improvement of the organization of research activity" of February 20, 2002 No. UP-3029 and Resolutions of the Cabinet of the Republic of Uzbekistan "About creation of National library of Uzbekistan of Alisher Navoiy" of April 12, 2002 No. 123.
The national library of Uzbekistan is created based on the State library of the Republic of Uzbekistan of Alisher Navoiy and Republican scientific and technical library and is under authority of the Cabinet of the Republic of Uzbekistan. The library is founded in 1870 as the Tashkent public library.
Assistance in the organization of fund of library was rendered by the Ministry of national education, Academy of Sciences, Public library, the Geographical society and General staff of Russia, the offered doublet editions from the book-depositories. By May, 1870 more than 2200 volumes (1200 names) which were the book center of future library were collected.
The national library of Uzbekistan of Alisher Navoiy – nation-wide universal information and library organization, the largest information and library organization and the cultural center of the Republic, locates the most complete collection of national printing and editions of foreign countries. Funds of library contain over 10 million units of storage, from them more than 3.5 million edition of national printing.
Pride of library is the meeting of especially valuable collections – over 200 thousand copies of editions from 15-19th centuries, from them over 16 thousand copies rare and ancient editions, manuscripts, lithographs, the first national magazines and newspapers. Annually reading rooms of library are visited by more than 500 thousand users, the knigovydacha makes more than 2 million pieces. In 2010-2011 the new building of library with a total area of 38 thousand sq.m. which includes the main production zones, service areas of readers, premises for storage of fund and the hall for carrying out the international symposiums on 960 places is built. In the new building 13 reading rooms and also showroom, the museum of the book, the children's room, book salon, a movie center, the Internet and the media center, cafeteria, recreation areas are provided.
