In early June 2024, it became known about the hacking of a cryptocurrency exchange with expanded financial services of OKH. Attackers were able to gain unauthorized access to two user accounts and steal significant amounts of funds.

It is reported that cybercriminals carried out a coordinated attack through the SMS notification system. New keys with withdrawal and trading permissions were generated. The attackers, according to the results of the preliminary investigation, are part of an organized group, and the attack itself was targeted.

The incident was first reported by the founder of SlowMist blockchain security company Yu Xian. Immediately after the hack, users of the OKH crypto exchange began to urgently withdraw money. It is said that in one day alone, OKH users withdrew approximately $205 million, per week - $633 million. Thus, the amount of funds withdrawn as of mid-June 2024 approached $1 billion.

The official statement of OKX emphasizes that the exchange is engaged in establishing the causes of what happened and solving the problem. If it is determined that the incident was due to the fault of the platform, OKX will assume full responsibility for any losses incurred by users. According to some reports, the victims did not have two-factor authentication activated, which made it easier for attackers to carry out an attack.

It is also reported that on June 4, 2024, fraudsters used the leaked OKX user data to seize another client's account. After that, the hackers reset the victim's password and used deepfake video to apply for a change in the phone number associated with the account. As a result of this attack, crypto assets worth approximately $2 million were withdrawn from the account.[1]

Roskomnadzor blocked the site of the OKX crypto exchange

On October 5, 2022, it became known about the blocking of the OKX crypto exchange website. Roskomnadzor took the appropriate measures by decision of the Prosecutor General's Office of the Russian Federation.

The agency has included the OKX domain name in the list of sites containing information, the distribution of which is prohibited in Russia. At the same time, no detailed explanations are provided in this regard by October 5, 2022.

The head of RosComSvoboda, Artem Kozlyuk, explained that the Prosecutor General's Office has the right to make demands to block Internet resources in three cases:

  • for the dissemination of extremist materials;
  • for the dissemination of fake and inaccurate information;
  • by order of the Central Bank of the Russian Federation on the recognition of a site as fraudulent.

Earlier, Roskomnadzor has already blocked cryptocurrency platforms. So, in September 2020, the exchange's website was blocked for a while, and the Binance Bestchange.ru site was blocked by the service three times, and each time the restrictions were lifted by a court decision due to the insolvency of the charges.[2]
