2024: Equipping trains with transparent Russian OLED displays installed instead of windows

Oktoglass has developed an innovative OLED display with variable transparency for installation as windows in passenger rail vehicles. The project, implemented jointly with Metro Media, has successfully passed pilot tests. This became known on October 30, 2024.

According to the press service, Skolkovo the new technology combines an organic LED display with an electrochromic filter, which allows you to automatically adjust the contrast of the image and block excessive external lighting. The development is protected by patents and provides acoustic and thermal comfort for passengers.

General Director of Oktoglass Vladislav Kravchenko stressed that an electrochromic filter made of tempered glass performs not only the function of darkening in bright light, but also provides additional protection for passengers in emergency situations.

The technological solution effectively blocks ultraviolet radiation, protecting both passengers and the OLED display itself. The system maintains stable image contrast at any level of ambient light.

The introduction of innovative display windows was the result of cooperation between Oktoglass and Metro Media, which entered into a specialized agreement on joint development. The project received support from the Skolkovo Foundation as part of the industrial technology development program.

According to the Center for the Development of Industrial Technologies of the Skolkovo Foundation, in 2023 the total revenue of companies working in the direction of electrochromic glazing exceeded ₽250 million. The technology finds application in various fields due to the ability to adjust brightness, contrast and protection against ultraviolet radiation.[1]
