2022: British began to distribute electric blankets for free amid space gas prices
On April 4, 2022, due to a sharp increase in natural gas prices in the UK, one of the electricity suppliers began to distribute free electric blankets to customers, trying to help people not freeze.
Octopus Energy distributes electric blankets to customers in financial difficulties, the company said in its responses to messages on its Twitter page.
Since the beginning of April 2022, utility bills have risen sharply for millions of UK residents due to an increase in the national insurance tax, due to record high prices for fuel and natural gas, whose prices jumped 54%, as well as a rapid increase in inflation, which contributed to the strongest decline in the standard of living of the population in at least the last six decades. The government has pledged £9 billion ($12 billion) in support, but anti-poverty campaigners say it is not enough to prevent a doubling of the number of poor families.
Electric blankets can help people stay warm without having to heat the whole house or apartment. One of the users on Twitter said that he did not include heating this winter due to rising prices.
A representative of Octopus said that so far 5,000 pieces have been issued to people who meet the requirements of the financial support program. To get help from customers, you need to complete an online form. Blankets will be issued primarily to those who are most in financial need, and will vary depending on how many Octopus have left.
The company said it has taken other steps to help customers, including renting infrared cameras to help people determine how they can better insulate their homes and apartments.[1]
