2024: Massive cyber attack. Electronic locks, booking and payment systems disabled
On April 1, 2024, the American hotel chain Omni Hotels & Resorts, which operates 50 facilities in the United States and Canada, reported a massive cyber attack on its IT infrastructure. The hacker invasion disrupted the work of electronic locks, booking systems and payment services.
The official report says that signs of malicious activity were registered on March 29, 2024. The company's specialists had to turn off some of the computer systems to minimize the consequences of a cyber attack. However, this provoked technical problems. Omni Hotels & Resorts customers complain of numerous problems with registration and service. Wireless Wi-Fi in hotels does not work. Guests say that they cannot get into their rooms due to the blocking of electronic locks, and the staff takes up to 30 minutes to unlock the doors manually.

The hacker attack affected not only computer systems, but also telephone communications. Customers report that when trying to reach some hotels, an answering machine is triggered, notifying that "the company is experiencing technical difficulties." As of early April 2024, it is not clear whether the invasion is related to the introduction of a ransomware program. Omni Hotels & Resorts says an investigation into the incident is ongoing: third-party specialists are involved in determining the scale of the attack and assessing the possible leakage of personal information.
