2016: Renaming into Open Connectivity Foundation

On February 19, 2016 it was announced renaming of industry consortium Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) into Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF) which will be engaged in standardization of an ecosystem of Internet of Things.

Rebranding of OCF happened after Microsoft, Cisco, IBM and Qualcomm entered the organization. The companies claim that it is about creation of new consolidation. The total quantity of participants of this alliance by February 19, 2016 exceeds 150.

The Open Connectivity Foundation organization will be engaged in development of uniform standards for Internet of Things

The purpose of OCF is standardization of IoT-standards thanks to which it will be possible to create devices and solutions (home appliances, computers phones, industrial equipment, different sensors, etc.) capable it is easy and safe to interact with each other regardless of the producer, the operating system, a chipset and a data transmission technology. Development of the corresponding specifications, protocols and projects open source is planned (Open Source).[1]

As the executive vice president of Micrsoft Windows and Devices Group Terry Myerson, fragmentation of the industry of Internet of Things noted and closeness of the standards tied to a certain company interfere with development of innovations. Microsoft began to solve this problem, having supplied the Windows platform with the 10th support of the OCF standards, the top manager of corporation noted.

OCF will become the competitor of the industry consortium AllSeen Alliance created in 2014 with the same purpose — development of uniform standards for technologies of Internet of Things. Several participants of OCF, including Qualcomm and Microsoft enter it.

As notes the The Seattle Times edition, the decision on creation of the competitor of AllSeen Alliance was caused by the fact that producers doubt capability of the organization to defend from the claims connected with violation of the intellectual property rights.[2]

2014: Creation of Open Interconnect Consortium

The companies of the industry of high technologies, including Atmel, Broadcom, Dell, Intel, Samsung Electronics and Wind River, combined in 2014 efforts for creation of consortium which optimizes possibilities of interaction and will define requirements to the connected devices in Internet of Things. Open Interconnect Consortium (OIC) will develop the general communication basis based on the standardized technologies for wireless connection and intellectual management of information streams between personal computing devices and the new systems. Reliable functioning will be ensured for different form factors, operating systems and types of service.

Participants of consortium will provide program and engineering resources for development of specifications of the protocol, implementation of an open source code and the program of certification. The OIC specification uses different solutions for connection, including the existing and new standards of wireless data transmission, and will begin to support a large number of operating systems. Market leaders, since the companies creating solutions for the "smart" house and office and finishing developers of the digital automobile systems, will take part in the program. It guarantees that the OIC specifications will allow the companies to create products which will reliably manage information exchange. New developments will effectively function in the changing conditions of the environment, power supply and capacity and even in the conditions of lack of Internet connection. The first project of an open source code of consortium OIC will be focused on solutions for office and the "smart" house. New developments will allow to receive notifications of the systems of the "smart" house and industrial devices using protected smartphones, tablets or the PC. Users will have an opportunity to manage far off heating systems for economy of energy and money. And in a corporate segment the staff of the companies and representatives of suppliers will be able to work in a protect mode during the meetings. It is expected that in the future the organization will develop specifications for the automotive industry, medicine and the industry.
