2021: Receiving $300 million in compensation from Apple for patent infringement on LTE technologies

On August 13, 2021, Apple must pay a lump sum of $300 million for violating patents for wireless standard technologies owned by Optis Wireless Technology and its affiliates.

Earlier in the same case, a jury ruled that Apple owes $506 million for violating LTE patents of Optis, PanOptis Patent Management and Unwired Planet using technologies used in iPhone and other LTE-enabled products. In April 2021, a US district judge ordered a new trial after it turned out that the amount awarded did not comply with Optis' obligation to license patents on fair, reasonable and non-discriminatory terms (FRAND).

We thank the jury for the time spent, but are disappointed with the verdict and plan to appeal. Optis does not produce any products, so we do not agree with the decision, and its only business is to file lawsuits against other companies using patents that they accumulate. We will continue to defend ourselves against their attempts to receive unreasonable payments and make money on it, "said Apple spokesman Josh Rosenstock.

The company PanOptis used patents developed by Panasonic, Samsung and LG in its business. The ownership of Panasonic and LG was transferred to Optis Cellular in 2014, and the ownership of Samsung passed to Unwired Planet in 2017. PanOptis participates in an international fight in order to receive up to $7 billion from Apple for violating SEP owned by it. As a result of the case in the UK, a global royalty rate for patents may be set, which will prompt Apple to leave the British market if it is forced to pay a commercially unacceptable amount.[1]
