2025: Launch of the first production of bioresorbable magnesium implants for maxillofacial surgery and traumatology in Russia
On May 12, 2025, it became known that the first production site for the production of bioresorbable magnesium implants for maxillofacial surgery and traumatology was launched in Russia. The project was implemented by scientists from NITU MISIS together with the industrial partner Osteo-Saiber.
According to the developers, the main advantage of the developed metal structures is their ability to dissolve in the human body, which eliminates the need for repeated operations to remove implants. Magnesium alloys patented by NUST MISIS scientists have unique biocompatibility properties and optimal performance characteristics.
Director of the advanced engineering school of NITU MISIS Alexander Komissarov noted that the first initiative clinical testing took place on the basis of the Russian University of Medicine of the Ministry of Health of Russia. According to him, two operations were carried out, during which the implants showed a high degree of fixation, and resorption passed without complications. Currently, together with an industrial partner, the process of obtaining a registration certificate of Roszdravnadzor is underway.
The Osteo-Cyber company, which became a resident of the Skolkovo Foundation in 2024, plans to produce 18 types of products for traumatology and six for maxillofacial surgery, including screws, pins and plates, from magnesium alloy. Innovative methods of blanks make it possible to control the rate of dissolution of the material, which ensures the gradual replacement of the structure with bone tissue.
Margarita Kellerman, head of Osteo-Cyber, stressed that the development is already of interest in India, the Middle East and Latin America. Thanks to a partnership with NUST MISIS and leading medical institutions, a full production cycle technology has been created, ready to scale.
