Oxfam - a British-based international association for 2023 consists of 21 organizations in more than 90 countries around the world. The organisation was set up in 1942 in Oxford as a local committee to help the starving and has since been involved in helping those affected by humanitarian crises around the globe.
In this case, the mechanism of the organization's work is interesting: since its founding, large Oxfam offices have begun to appear in real and former British dominions and territories - Canada, Ireland, Australia, the United States and others. Through these large offices, the association spread its influence, sent volunteers or resources to "crisis points" in Asia, Africa, Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean.
2018: Payment of prostitutes from donations received
Employees of the association have repeatedly fallen into scandalous stories. For example, one of the most high-profile scandals occurred in 2018: Oxfam was accused of hiding employees' ties to prostitutes (for the most part, minors) during the aftermath of the earthquake in Haiti.
An internal investigation revealed additional facts of sexual exploitation, intimidation and the creation of pornographic material. The head of the Belgian branch of Oxfam, Ronald von Hauwermeiren, admitted that he not only used the services of prostitutes, but also brought them to a villa in Port-au-Prince, the rent of which was paid by the organization from donations received.
The investigation also showed that similar events took place at the Oxfam mission in Chad in 2006. Her boss was also Ronald von Hauwermeiren. The British government promptly announced a complete review of cooperation with the largest humanitarian aid organization, which, however, does not prevent it from continuing its activities to this day.
