From the middle of the XVI century. The Catholic Church begins to publish the Index Librorum Prohibitorum index of banned books, replenishing it with more and more new publications. In 1627, the director of the Oxford Bodleian library suggested using this index as a guide - and automatically purchasing all the books included in it for the university.
